Would you find it to be interesting to sit down in actual Mooby’s restaurant from the Clerks movie sequels? The chance to do so was there during Comic-Con 2022. Kevin Smith’s fictional restaurant has been touring the states, popping up in various cities where a random (real) restaurant is taken over to be re-themed and turned into just that. Allowing you to step into the universe (or View Askewniverse) of Jay & Silent Bob. With downtown San Diego being the latest “pop-up” within the tour.
Naturally, this is a great way to promote the movies and draw in both old and new fans alike. While also promoting the new Clerks 3 movie that will be coming out a little later this year (September 13, 2022).
I had a chance to step into this wonderful craziness where I was able to not only experience this pop-up in one of the best possible locations for it to be in (San Diego during Comic-Con International) but also to experience the food, as well as some surprise entertainment. It was held at the Tin Roof (the normal name of the restaurant) at 401 G St.
The menu featured multiple items that made you feel like you were ordering the real thing. Of course, you kind of are since it really is fast food that comes out to you. The burger tasted a little similar to what you’d get from Wendy’s.
Everything comes out to you in a typical paper bag with the restaurant’s name and mascot printed on the side, along with optional plastic cups that change color when they are filled with a cold beverage. I say optional since they were only included with cocktail orders (sodas earning you a basic, but still themed, paper cup).
The staff of the restaurant (the actual restaurant that was taken over) was fantastic and appeared to be having just as much fun. An opportunity to step out of the normal day-to-day routines they were used to and take their own stage to become part of something unique.
As for the surprise entertainment, it wasn’t so much a surprise since this was announced with the ability to get your hands on a ticket to attend in advance. Saturday evening, Kevin Smith and radio personality Ralph Garman took the stage to record a live episode of the Hollywood Babble-On Smodcast (aka, podcast). Offering around an hour of fun-filled and incredibly humorous entertainment. No surprise there as it is Kevin Smith (it’s kind of a given).
Of course, this wasn’t the only visit Kevin paid to the restaurant as he was also there for additional podcast events that took place there during the Comic-Con event. Including “Fat Man Beyond”, “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old”, and “Clerks, Too.”
Sadly, Comic-Con is now officially over. So if you missed it, you’ll have to wait until it pops up somewhere new. Currently, their Facebook page doesn’t show any future events, so there is no telling where it will end up next.
