Gamers have been waiting a long time for Microsoft to properly get into the VR business when it comes to the Xbox ecosystem of products. Although it does seem that we might not ever see something that will play with the Xbox consoles, there is an Xbox-themed solution coming that will act as the next best thing and something to keep us busy (for now).
Microsoft and Meta seemed to have teamed up to create an Xbox-themed Meta VR headset. Likely, it will just be the Meta Quest 3 themed with Xbox colors. Although we don’t know for sure as Meta could be working on new hardware too (highly unlikely though). It will come with an Xbox controller and I’m sure it will come with some kind of typical trial for Game Pass Ultimate (for those that haven’t tried it yet).
As mentioned, it won’t be working with the consoles but it will be centered around using it for the Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Something that Xbox fans have had access to on Meta Quest headsets since December. Games themselves aren’t available in full VR, but you’ll be able to drop yourself into a virtual gaming room with a big floating screen in front of you.
With an expanded partnership with Meta, this could open doors for the company. Like the chance to create actual VR-compatible games with a new section within Game Pass for them (for users that are connected using a headset). This is just our own speculation, but there isn’t much stopping them if the two companies want to make this happen. It could also take the pressure off of Microsoft when it comes to creating its own VR headset in general.
For now, we can just likely expect the continued use of a virtual screen to play your favorite games on. Which in itself, is at least a huge step forward for Xbox fans compared to no VR support at all.
