Bethesda has announced that it will be scrapping its own launcher as a source of accessing all of its games via PC this April. The company threw in its cards and likely admitted to itself that it was a waste of time when these efforts could be placed elsewhere (like working on Elder Scrolls 6 — oh, my broken hopes).
A launcher is something you install on your computer to gain access to a library and/or store of games that can be purchased, downloaded, and/or managed via it. The most common ones are names like Steam, GOG, Epic, and Blizzard.
Every company seems to think it needs to have its own launcher for its games now, and it is starting to make things a bit polluted. Next thing you know, gamers have 5-8 launchers installed on their system. Kind of like nightclubs in Vegas. One casino puts up a nightclub and it becomes a hit. Next thing you know, every casino has one and now you get inundated with options.
Thankfully, Bethesda feels it is time to scrap the idea and move back to Steam. A move that will be happening this April, when the company will be providing hers instructions on how to migrate their purchased titles over to a Steam wallet (account).
Users will continue to have access to their games via the launcher through May. After which point, they will only be available via Steam’s launcher. A better choice since it brings a marge larger selection of games into one place (and one less thing running in the background of your computer).
