Netflix launched the expansion into gaming last year as an attempt to break further into the streaming market and go up against companies like Xbox, PlayStation, Google, and Valve. At least, a small attempt at doing it.
The company has 24 games to pick from currently and is looking to more than double that by the end of this year. However, it doesn’t seem that anyone is actually playing them. It has been said that only around 1% of current subscribers are making use of them while many others didn’t even know the feature existed.
I took a quick tour around the office asking anyone I ran into and almost every response had something to do with forgetting that the option was there (even know we have covered this in the past). So it doesn’t look like the feature is a hot ticket item just yet.
Maybe this will change as Netflix continues to grow its library of titles, while also continuing to focus on unique titles related to Netflix-original titles (like Stranger Things). It’s hard to say for sure and the company may have to consider acquisitions of known platforms to get the ball rolling faster. Else we may see the feature come and go like so many other things in recent years.
