Most first-person shooter fans that have been around for a while should remember GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 console. It was an addicting game for its time and has lived on as a nostalgic piece of history that has received a lot of demand for a remake.
That remake never happened, but there have been some third-party attempts by fans to resurrect the title via PC. One of which recently gained a lot of attention a few years back before it was shut down via a court order (MGM didn’t like someone freely running around with its intellectual property). Since then, Rare (the original developer) seems to have taken an interest in the fact that there was so much popularity surrounding the ability to play a refreshed version.
Now the company has been working on releasing an official version that will be launching on Xbox and Nintendo (Switch) consoles. It will feature refreshed graphics including smoother framerates and the ability to play at up to a 4K resolution. There will also be achievements to unlock.
What will make it exciting for fans on Xbox is that it won’t cost a thing for those with Game Pass. It will be part of the Rare Replay collection of games.
The only catch is that it will be a soft refresh of the original game. The game hasn’t been remastered from the ground up with a modern graphics engine or anything. It will feature online multi-player in some situations, which will expand on the original game’s local multiplayer feature.
It will be interesting to see how the public responds when the game launches. Maybe if it is a success, we may eventually get a properly remastered version. It is hard to say for sure as the company seems to be taking the easy road for now.
As of right now, an official release date has not yet been announced. Nor do we know if it will launch to both Nintendo and Xbox consoles simultaneously or staggered. However, there is a lot of hype going around by both companies thus you can expect it is probably coming soon.
