Now we know why Sony has been pushing so hard to go after third-party companies that have been designing console covers for the PlayStation 5 (PS5). These companies have been coming up with ways that allow users to customize the color of their systems. However, Sony considered it to be against their policies and an infringement.
Typically, the other companies simply have to change the shape or look of things so it is just different enough that a company like Sony would go away. This doesn’t stop Sony though as it continues to chase after these companies with each attempt.
The reason? Sony planned to release its own console covers for the gaming console. Either that or Sony got wise to the fact that there was a demand for these and decided to fill it directly. Makes an easy killing if the competition has been eliminated and consumers have nowhere else to turn.
You’ll be able to get your hand on one sometime in January (2022). They will be available from select retailers in the color options of Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple. Sony hasn’t listed which retailers will be carrying the new covers just yet, but you can bet that places like Amazon will be in the list. They will MSRP for $54.99.
In the meantime, there are still 3rd party options out there that you can find today. At least, until Sony goes after them as well.
