Finding enough capacity for all your favorite games continues to be a challenge as games keep growing in size and NVMe solutions haven’t been growing as quickly as HDDs have over the years. Some of these games have grown to 200-300GB+ in size, so a simple 1TB drive just isn’t enough anymore. So WD (Western Digital) has a new solution with its announced WD 8TB WD_BLACK SN850X Gaming Internal NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD with Heatsink.
The new drive will be rolling out to retail shelves by the end of this month, and will feature up to Up to 7,200 MBps transfer speeds (6,600 MBps write). Making for one heck of a drive for your gaming needs. Providing speeds faster than any modern games require and plenty enough space to store most if not all of your collection locally.
With new technologies being born into the SSD industry, things are about to change within the next year or so. NVMe solutions might finally be able to catch up to (or even surpass) HDD. But this will always come at a cost thanks to how inflated NVMe pricing is. So it will likely be even longer before consumers can enjoy any of this.
So 8TB might be the best thing you’ll be able to slide into your PS5 for some time. However, even that comes at a cost as it also isn’t so consumer-friendly when you look at its price tag. This drive will currently set you back around $899 (depending on where you buy it). This is based on the current price at the time of writing this. Thus there won’t be a lot of consumers rushing to get their hands on this one anytime soon. However, if you find that you have bottomless pockets, the drive will be dropping soon.
