There is nothing more annoying than running out of space on your hard drive when it comes to adding a new game to your favorite gaming console. Then you have to shuffle things around, comb through everything to determine what can be deleted and what is absolutely valuable enough to keep or buy into an external drive.
The latter part is going to get expensive since the Xbox Series X will be making use of NVMe inside. So buying into an external option is going to be a giant slow down unless you go NVMe there as well. Thankfully, Microsoft is working on a solution to make all of this easier.
Their idea is “why install the entire game onto your hard drive if all you ever do is play online?”. Perfect for Call of Duty or Halo fans that prefer battling it up in multi-player more than anything else. Sot hey are working to make sure the Xbox Series X will allow you to choose what parts of a game to keep on your drive. Never plan on playing online? Then uninstall the multi-player part of the game completely. Don’t ever plan on playing the campaign a second time? Uninstall the campaign and keep multi-player.
It’s a neat feature that could potential save you a lot of space now that games are going to start taking up a larger chunk of the drive. Especially now that they are throwing around the term “8K” (who knows how long before we start seeing that in games).
We just hope that it extends past just a few features. Using Call of Duty as an example again, what if you play online and enjoy the game, but have no plans to ever touch zombies? It would be nice to be able to just uninstall the zombies portion of the game.
Clearly, it sounds like this may heavily depend on the developers providing this information within each game so that the console has a way of knowing what is what. Either that or the dev kit will forcefully split things down the middle for every game (campaign for online). Either way, it is sure to save you some space and help prolong the day that you have to add more storage to your system. Every bit helps!
The PlayStation 5 will also be making use of NVMe. There is no word from Sony yet on if they plan to offer any similar options with the new console.

Yes please! I never play multi-player content, so this would be nice as some of that stuff consumes a LOT of space on the drive.
