Amazon has made the decision to shut the doors to its online cloud-based storage service called Amazon Drive. Didn’t know that Amazon has its own drive service to compete with the likes of names like Microsoft, Apple, and Google? Well, that might have contributed to this decision. Then again, anyone with an Amazon Kindle device likely knew about it.
The company will be shifting its focus to its Amazon Photos service, allowing users to continue to back up, share, and organize photos and videos online using this in place of Amazon Drive. Apparently Amazon felt that the drive service wasn’t being used for anything else. Thus why not merge things together vs having a fragmented list of services?
Amazon will be officially closing the doors permanently on December 31, 2023. At this time, no one will have access to the service any longer. Any photos or videos that you have within Amazon Drive will have already been moved to the Amazon Photos service. However, anything beyond these file types will need to be downloaded by you if you don’t want the information lost when the doors officially shut.
Prime members (subscribers) have access to unlimited photo storage and up to 5GB of video storage via Amazon Photos. Non-Prime subscribers (basic Amazon customers) have access to 5GB of storage total. Additional space can be obtained through additional subscription options like most drive/photo services out there.
