A surprising move by Amazon as they decide to drop support for their Amazon shopping app for Windows Phone devices. Amazon’s app is popular for being able to instantly access your user account details, search for products to buy or add to your shopping lists. However, what it is most popular for is its ability to scan product barcodes and instantly access their price and information on Amazon. The latter is a great tool for quick price matching in stores to make sure you truly are getting the buy you are looking for.
Users will still have access to the app on their phones until August 15th, 2016. Amazon recommends visiting Amazon.com beyond that for future visits. The mobile version of their website isn’t bad, but of course, you do lose that crazy useful tool of being able to scan barcodes vs manually searching through a list of products for an exact match of what you are holding in your hands.
I personally find myself using the app on a weekly basis for scanning items, as I am a very strategic (OCD) shopper. So this is sad news for me as I prefer to carry around my Windows device. Hopefully, this is just a waiting period as they transition to a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app. So far, there is no mention of this just yet.
If you happen to have an iPhone or Android device on hand, the app still works strongly with these and details on where to find it can be found on Amazon right here.
Update 02/2017
We swapped the main image out above with a new one containing an actual screenshot from a phone that has the app installed still (an older test device we had laying around). Apparently, Amazon didn’t like us using a general graphic of their official app icon, complaining copyright. Remember, don’t dare tell the press they can’t use an image of the product they are discussing unless there is a general embargo on something. It wasn’t a custom icon–it was the official icon. “There’s nothing to see here folks. Keep moving!”
