Today is another unfortunate day for Microsoft as it experiences yet another outage that resonates across multiple major services. The outage rocked everything from Bing, Microsoft’s homepage, Microsoft account user login system, Office 365, OneDrive, Azure, Dynamics, Teams, and Xbox Live.
Some of which (services) are still experiencing the outage at the time of this article’s publication. The issue apparently troubles with DNS and Microsoft’s Azure cloud network.
DNS issue impacting multiple Microsoft services – Recovery in progress
SUMMARY OF IMPACT: Starting at approximately 21:30 UTC on 01 Apr 2021, customers may experience intermittent issues accessing Microsoft services, including Azure, Dynamics, and Xbox Live.CURRENT STATUS: Microsoft rerouted traffic to our resilient DNS capabilities and are seeing improvement in service availability. We are continuing to investigate the cause of the DNS issue. The next update will be provided in 30 minutes or as events warrant.
(As of 10:36 PM UTC on April 1, 2021 via azule’s status page for the error/event)
Some of these services appear to be working again since everything went down around an hour ago, showing that Microsoft’s team has been hard at work bringing everything back. Sadly, when it comes to DNS troubles, the resolution isn’t always as fast as one would hope for, as DNS changes/fixes have to ripple across the internet and all of the cached information stored by ISPs and other DNS records have to cycle (unless you set your DNS server information for your connection to Microsoft’s servers).
