One of the drawbacks of streaming Netflix to your phone or tablet is the inability to experience your favorite shows or movies in surround. Even with the right headphones, you are left with a stereo experience. However, that is coming to an end thanks to it adding support for spatial audio.
Spatial audio takes surround mixes and converts them into a virtual spatial experience using headphones and the result is usually quite entertaining. There are many companies that have been developing this, including Sennheiser, Apple (with the AirPods Pro), Dolby, THX, Embody, and Waves. Adding a new experience to movies, TV, video games, and more (Audeze’s Mobius headphones make for a great experience, for example).
Netflix has teamed up with Sennheiser to add the option to its streaming service. Allowing you to pair your favorite shows or movies to any pair of headphones. Bringing the content to a whole new level (for headphone users, at least).
To find content that supports this, you simply have to visit the search bar and typing “spatial audio” and Netflix will spit out a number of options like Stranger Things. The list is not all-encompassing by any means, but it will likely grows through time.
This was bound to happen sooner or later and you will likely see support roll out for competing services as well this year.
