Today the good folks at AairHut sent me something totally different from the very stylish TWS earbuds which we’ve seen from them in the past. The AairHut Portable Sound Machine is intended to be a handy way to get good, restful sleep from home to hotel rooms. I spent a good night checking out the features so let’s take a closer look:
Out of the Box
The AairHut Sound Machine comes bundled in a nice box with clean descriptive graphics. Inside the box you will find the sound machine, a USB cable and a USB power supply. There is also a complete instruction manual but this sound machine is very easy to use. You will probably read the instruction manual once and never look at it again. The AairHut Sound Machine is white and grey plastic with a row of buttons on the right side, a volume slider at the top, and a nice big speaker. There is also a knob to set a sleep timer. The device can be powered by the included USB power system, or you can place 3 AA batteries (not included) in the back panel, and it’s now a wireless travel unit which you can use in hotels, motels, or even camping if the natural sounds of the world are too distracting. We live on a busy street so I use these kinds of sound machines to drown out the traffic noise at bed time and always travel with one. I’ve had poor luck in the past with battery-powered units but the AairHut Portable Sound Machine operated great with either batteries or the included USB power source. Let’s look deeper:
What’s the Deal?
As I mentioned earlier; along the right side of the AairHut Portable Sound Machine is a row of six buttons. These buttons function from bottom to top as “on/off” + Fan sound, Lullaby, Summer Night, Rain, Ocean, and White Noise. To turn the unit on/off you just hold the first button for a few seconds and you will hear the Fan sound begin. To change the sounds just push the button of your choice. I found the choices to be well thought out and there are no obvious “loop clicks” which occur when a too short sound sample is produced by the unit then it loops around and around. This is an absolutely non looping sound machine which is very important for good sleep In the past I’ve had units which were so obviously looping that the effect kept me awake instead of soothing me to sleep. This AairHut sound machine succeeds at creating realistic rain sounds, ocean wave sounds, and fan sounds. The Summer night selection sounds very much like camping in a place where there are 100s of tree frogs, so that is a personal choice. I tend to the Fan sounds, and rain sounds when I want a restful sleep but all the sounds were exactly as described by their names. The volume is controlled by a slider which works very smoothly. Unlike some other units I’ve used, the AairHut Portable Sound Machine this unit is loud enough to drown out most background noise. The volume slider adjusts left to right, from no sound to the loudest volume. On the very top of the sound machine you will see the USB Micro power port, a 3.5mm headphone jack for privacy and a white LED. Which brings me to my only complaint which is common to most of these devices I’ve tested and used over the years. A very bright, white or blue LED is not helpful for restful sleep: I usually put a bit of tape over the LEDs as I am very light-sensitive at night and suggest you do the same if needed. The headphone jack worked well and I noticed the volume doesn’t get “too loud” in one’s ears if using earbuds or over the ear headphones. Last is the Sleep Timer knob. This knob dials in your sleep from a 15, 30, or 60 minute nap all the way to infinity so you can sleep the night away in complete comfort. To turn the unit off you just hold the power/Fan Sound button for about 3 seconds and it will shut right down.
A Good Night’s Rest
This AairHut Portable Sound Machine as tested is priced in the range one would expect for this kind of device. The sound machine is easy to operate with a good variety of soothing sound sources. The controls are simple and instinctive. I didn’t have to open the instruction manual to be able to use the device and get good, restful sleep right out of the box, but the Instructions, if needed, are clearly written and also very easy to understand. The AairHut Sound Machine uses two power sources, USB supplied AC or battery which is a great feature for those of us who are often travelling. You can even use a USB cable from your laptop to supply power if you’ve forgotten the included USB power supply and it still works great. The sounds were pleasing and relaxing to listen or sleep through the night. The Lullaby sound is clearly intended for babies or young children, but the rest will fill most adult’s needs for sound masking and sleep inducing sounds. My only complaint is common for those of us who prefer to sleep in deep darkness. A switch to turn off the very bright white power indicator LED would be great in a future model. Thanks again AairHut for showing your attention to detail when designing electronics to meet a specific need. 9.5 out of 10 for a very restful and useful unit.
