Just the other day, we spent some time talking about Beyerdynamic’s Soul BYRD wired earbuds, which wound of being a great start for getting your ears used to a brand like Beyerdynamic. Now we get to take that one step further with another entry within their BYRD series with the Blue BYRD wireless earbuds, which is similar to taking their Soul BYRD model and making it wireless without taking anything away from it when it comes to features.
These buds are light! The Blue BYRD buds seem have nearly the same weight as the wired buds, which is pretty impressive since being wireless means they come with a battery (or batteries) built into the mix, and yet they still come in at just 17 grams (0.6 oz). The buds by themselves are identical in size to their wired counterpart, which means everything wireless/Bluetooth (BT) takes place in the cable, which can be seen by two plastic compartments on both sides of the cable.
They of course feature an in-line remote to control music and calls with, that has a USB Type-C connection for charging them. The remote is multi-functioning, offering all of the same controls you would normally be used to, with additional options like the ability to fast forward of rewind a track (not just skip or go back). It doesn’t feel (to the touch) like the most interesting remote, but it does get the job accomplished.
The battery provides up to 6 hours worth of music, which should get you through any normal day of listening on and off as the day rolls by.
It comes with the USB cable that keeps them charged when the battery gets low, as well as five pairs of tips to get a snug fit with to help capture those lower notes and expand on the range with. You also get the same neat case that comes with the wired Soul BYRD model, which makes it easy to slide these into your pocket with while on the go.
When it comes to performance, these do sound a lot like the wired model with the benefit of Bluetooth. You do hear a little difference within the range since you are taking these wireless which involves compression, but it comes quite close beyond that.
The highs are nice and crisp, the mids are decent and the lows have a nice presence when you have selected the right tips for the size of your ears.
They do sound really good when paired with a device that also supports the same BT codecs. Their range is really nice and you can find yourself enjoying these against multiple genres of music that benefits with having a bit of an emphasis on high-highs and highs (again, nice and crisp).
Of course, at $149, it does make for a tough market as there are many wireless in-ears competing within the same range, including multi-driver models. So that is the only thing putting pressure on these as they have a lot to compete with.
For the sake of cable noise, where it rubs across the clothes during movement the noise is transferred to your ears, these are best worn around the back of your neck (like most single-wire BT bud designs). When you allow them to run across the front, they seem to pick up more noise from rubbing and these are very sensitive to bringing that noise to your ears, causing distraction. When the wire runs around the back of your neck, they don’t see to capture anywhere near the same amount of noise.
Thanks to the fact that they are so light, their comfort is fantastic. At times you can easily find yourself forgetting that they were there the whole time, especially if you have been sitting mostly still (ie, at a computer) for a length of time.
Our Conclusion
These sound really good for wireless buds and support some of the latest Bluetooth codecs, creating a lot of opportunity for a solid range of frequencies with little sacrifice caused by wireless compression. Their highs are very detailed and their mids and lows are just enough. They come with plenty of tips to get a comfortable seal with, and the case they come with features a perfect design for carrying around a pair of buds in. Their price tag gives them a lot of competition, but they do a pretty decent job at bringing their own qualities to the table. They are also very comfortable and blend right in when you aren’t moving around as much.
