July in Las Vegas is hot. So hot we spend half our day in the pool. I usually take my Zenbre Z4 speakers out for my music, but this week our great friends at EarFun sent out a pair of EarFun Air True Wireless earbuds. These earbuds come with a wireless charging case, 4 microphones for extremely clear phone conversations, are IPX7 waterproof, and have touch controls instead of buttons or pips.
It’s summer, and we’ve got another coupon offer: 10% OFF coupon on Amazon using Code: EARFUN35 during checkout (while it lasts). I really enjoyed testing and especially listening to the EarFun Air earbuds: Let’s look in the box!
Buds Within A Box Within A Box
Like all EarFun packages, the graphics are informative and fun: the specifications are clearly labeled on the back panel and various features are displayed around the box. Inside you will find black boxes. The biggest black box contains the User manual and the smaller box holds a USB C cable to charge your box if you don’t already have a Qi charging pad, and 3 sets of ear tips in size xs, s, and large. Like many manufacturers, the medium ear tips come preinstalled.
The ear tips for the EarFun Air are grey silicone. The charging box and earbuds come in basic black as shown in the above illustration. You want to make sure you have the correct fit for the ear tips which will ensure you will be able to hear the amazing clear stereo imaging and pumping low end which was really nice with a lot of presence. The charging box has led indicators for charging and when you open or close the lid to indicate charging levels and full charge. When you first open the charging box the EarFun Air earbuds begin to blink red/blue which indicates they are ready to pair to your device using the EarFun Air in your blue tooth connection list. I paired the Earfun Air earbuds with various devices including Apple Ipads, Samsung Phones and tablets, Amazon Fire tablets, and other manufacturers’ devices with no problem and a very good range using Bluetooth 5.0. I have a very large two-story home and these earbuds were able to work in 90% of my home until they get a bit wonky at the edge of the range. All controls for audio and phone use are on both earbuds because you can use the earbuds independently as Right ear, or Left ear as desired. Also: some controls are exclusive to the left earbud or right earbud such as “volume up/down” up is right earbud long touch, down is left earbud long touch, or “Digital assistant” is 3 taps on the left earpiece while 3 taps on the right earpiece advances the track. Two taps on either earpiece will play/pause the music, video, or whatever you are watching/listening to on your devices. The volume on Android devices was independent of the device: you can go full volume on the device or any set level. That becomes the “base volume” and the volume controls on either earpiece then increase or decrease the volume in your ears with the EarFun Air controlling the relative volume or intensity of the sound. In IoS systems the volume controls to control the actual volume of the device as paired with the earbuds. So how do they work? How do they sound? Let’s move on to the pool.
In the Drink
Those readers who follow my articles have noticed that I like to put IPX7 devices to the water test. The EarFun Air claim waterproof I’m going to check it out. Let’s talk about the earbuds a bit more first. These earbuds have 4 microphones that give such clarity to a phone call that my friends and fellow workers didn’t’ realize I was wearing a Bluetooth device on the phone calls until the told them.
Usually, the complaint becomes “you sound like you are in a box or a tunnel” but with the EarFun Air: They are that good. The charging time is reasonable (about an hour in actual testing) for a 6-7 hour listening time. You can charge the earbuds 4 times in the charging box for a full day and a half of great sound and music from the built-in composite drivers. The earbuds use capacitance detection technology to check if you’ve put them in your ears. It actually seems they don’t actually turn on completely until they are resting in your ear canals. Once you have them placed in your ears you will hear voice prompts indicating power on, the buds are linked, and the Bluetooth is connected to your device. Note: when swimming if you get your head completely wet, even from diving underwater a few inches(yes I did that many times) the sound will cut out until you get back out of the water. I found it was best to take the earbuds out and shake them a couple of times before the touch controls were operating properly again. Also: the charging box contacts are at the very bottom of the box. When charging, look carefully to see that the EarFun Air earbud LED lights up red before closing the box. If the earbuds aren’t properly seated, only one earbud may charge. Once you’ve paired your EarFun Air earbuds to your device: Simply opening the charging case automatically repairs the connection. Do they work underwater? No. Do they work for doing laps? Yes, as long as you don’t submerge your head completely. Let’s talk about sound.
Hear Hear
The Earfun Air True Wireless earbuds use dual 6mm composite drivers to closely reproduce your music in the same way you hear it in your speakers but directly in your ears. The PEEK + PU high fidelity dynamic driver has a very smooth mid and high-end response as well as really solid bass for earbuds. Remember: to experience that sound
your EarFun Air earbuds must be properly fitted using the correct sized included silicone ear tips. I spent hours listening to everything from funk to punk, pop, and classical and never had one complaint about sound reproduction quality in the EarFun Air earbuds. I did spend time playing with the Dolby Atmos setting on my Samsung S8 along with the built-in Eq and I can honestly say that anyone who wanted to take the time could really dial in their preferred sound using the EarFun Air earbuds along with the deeper settings on your smartphone or tablet. From the house to the car, from the car to the beach, from the beach to the office, and from the office to the pool or gym: The EarFun Air True Wireless earbuds really hit the bells and whistles for a TWS in-ear system. Were you to spend your day on standby you might never need to charge these more than once a week, and the charging box less than that.
Final Thoughts
I can see why the EarFun Air True Wireless earbuds with the charging case got a CES 2020 Innovation award. They are in the middle of the price points for similar units I’ve tested. They are IPX7 waterproof which means you can enjoy them sweating, or swimming, or in the shower, just not completely submerged due to the in-ear capacitance detection technology. There’s plenty of fast and convenient charging options including using wireless charging of the charging box(Qi pad not included!) or USB C. I had
zero problems connecting these earbuds to any device and once you get the hang of the touchpad controls, they are really seamless and simple to operate. Four built-in microphones supply a great sounding phone call to anyone you know without them wondering if you are stuck in an elevator. The earbuds can be used as a pair or separate for either ear. The touch screen controls for the phone are pretty sophisticated and have more utility than i need. I do have a few complaints: To advance tracks or return to previous tracks one would use 3 taps on either earbud to do so. However: once you’ve connected your digital assistant to the EarFun Air earbuds, you can only use that 3 taps to summon the genie on your left earpiece and the right earpiece can still advance tracks. You’ve lost the ability to return to previous tracks. Also: The left earpiece in the charging case was iffy for contact continuity, and I really had to look at the box and wiggle the left earpiece to ensure I had a good charging connection. One of my charging experiences actually only charged one earpiece. Thanks again for a really great device and that wonderful coupon code EARFUN35 for our readers. To me 8.5 out of 10. Most listeners would give these a clear 9.5 or 10. See you soon!
