Hey folks: it’s been a long summer and I hope you had a great time playing with your electronic devices at the pool or out and about in the woods or water. This past week I’ve had the pleasure of playing with the very interesting and powerful sounding EarFun Wave Wireless Headphones. These over the ear devices connect easily to any BT source, have extended BT range, were more than adequate for phone calls, and absolutely slay the low end, even at lower volumes: Let’s take a close look :
In The Box
With the EarFun Wave wireless headphones, the folks at EarFun are really jumping hard into the HiFi wireless private sonic experience market. The bright yellow and white retail box details the most important features of these entry-level high-performance home use headphones including 40mm drivers, up to 40 hour playback time, the voice assistant, and “what’s in the box”. When you open that retail box your new pair of EarFun Wave wireless headphones are in a nice semi hardshell case, which also holds a 3.5mm x 3.5mm audio cable about a meter long, a USB- Micro USB charging cable, the warranty card, and a card which informs you that EarFun will donate 1 dollar to Unicef for any social media comment made by an owner. Inside the retail box, you will also find the multilanguage instruction manual. I’ll be honest: I will peck at the buttons to figure out functions on every device before opening any instruction manual and these new “Wave” headphones were no exception. The headset is basic black, very comfortable for a few hours and not heavy in a bad way. On the right earpiece you will find the 3 buttons which operate the headphones; from top-down is: Volume/next track, MFB(multifunction button which does power/pause/play), and Volume down/ previous track along with the USB charging port. Volume is quick clicks, tracks are long clicks. Play/pause is quick clicks, Power on/off is long clicks. The left earpiece only has the audio connection which allows you to continue to use the Wave headphones after the onboard battery needs to be recharged. Like every wireless or wired headset or earphones I test, I connected them to my DAP, and various devices including iPads, Samsung tablets/phones, and Amazon Fire products laptops and pcs. Every device connected quickly and easily: just look for Earfun Wave in your Bluetooth device list and connect. Let’s go deeper!
What have you done for me lately?
When you take the folded headphones out of the case, the manufacturer recommends a full charge before use. Because the EarFun Wave headphones utilize quick charging tech, you can get up to 2 hours of play from at little as 10 minutes of charge time, and a full charge can play up to 40 hours depending on volume levels and Bluetooth range. A full charge allowed me to play with these headphones for over 10 hours a day for 3 days before they needed to be recharged. That including being in rest mode, listening to tracks, or video, and making/taking phone calls. When making phone calls the MFB is the: answer/reject button, and the other two buttons are pretty much only useful for volume or paging tracks when listening to music. No matter if it’s tracks, files, or streaming service: the EarFun Wave headphones will play/pause, and index tracks. To get to a previous track you will more often than not have to hit that button twice or it will just keep playing the current track from the beginning over and over. Because these headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0 they connect quickly and stay connected with an extended range up to 60 ft. I had no problems running about a 4000 square foot two-story office building without any notable drop out until I was at that 50 ft plus range and on a different floor. When charging with the included USB cable an LED will indicate charging with a red LED, and after a full charge, the LED will be green. As mentioned earlier: the EarFun Wave wireless headphones will connect quickly and easily and will indicate most of what you are doing with a voice prompt. A pleasant woman’s voice will indicate the Wave status with phrases such as “Power on/Power off”, or “Connected/Disconnected.” Now we know how they operate, let’s take them to the listening room!
Like every wireless or wired headphone or earbud system I’ve tested over the years, I will always do one consistent behavior: I listen to Flac files, Mp3 files, Wav files which I’ve collected or created over the years as well as a long time spent streaming to the device from different devices and operating systems. I will listen to any and all varieties of music trying to zero in on the sweet spot for every headphone or device so I can make an honest recommendation to our readers. Right away when listening to classical music I heard two distinct bumps in the spectrum as reproduced by the EarFun Wave headphones: there is a definite enhancement to the low end, which I would expect from consumer headphones, and a bit of a midrange enhancement which is notable because these Wave headphones can get plenty loud, and that’s the range which can do serious harm. The EarFun Wave headphones have a nice circuit which is warm and thumpy even at low volume levels. I found Pop music or club music to really demonstrate the sweet spot for these babies. Realize when the battery dies; if you decide to continue with the included audio cable you will be using your own power source for the EarFun Wave headphones, and volume levels can get to dangerous volume levels. Use all due caution and allow your ears to rest from time to time and limit long periods of time exposed to very loud volumes. When making/taking phone calls I really understood how well the noise rejection works in these headphones: one can barely hear one’s own voice when talking and that can be disconcerting. I was very impressed with the sound in the headphones from phone calls. It is really clear and crispy. I just found myself speaking louder than usual because I couldn’t actually hear myself in the headphones at all. Depending on the device you are using volume buttons can operate the onboard volume, or with Apple and Kindle Fire, your EarFun Wave headphones operated the onboard volume controls of the tablets. When you are directly connected using the included 3.5mm audio patch cable the onboard controls are bypassed.
I spent a lot of time listening to, making phone calls, and really just enjoying the freedom which was afforded me by the EarFun Wave wireless Headphones. The headphones were very comfortable for extended time periods and I wore them a minimum of 8 hours a day. I was able to move anywhere in my environment without loss of signal whether making phone calls, just listening to my favorite streaming stations on any device or pre-recorded tracks on my DAP. There is an included audio cable to ensure the fun doesn’t end when you’ve forgotten over the last 3 or 5 days to recharge your device. 10 minute charge time is 2-hour playtime along with 2 hour charge time to that 30 or 40 hours of wireless fun and productivity. I loved the live club sound which the EarFun Wave headphones really deliver and clear and crispy phone calls are absolutely necessary in today’s highly connected world. My only complaints: not being able to hear my own voice in the headsets while engaged in phone calls and the case needs some sort of strap it’s very bulky to carry. 9 out of ten for some really fun and useful extended range wireless over the ear headphones. We’ve been seeing a lot of great products from the folks at EarFun lately and I’m really looking forward to the future with this company. See you soon!!
