We have tested so many scooters that have passed through the office here, covering some of the biggest names to names we had never heard of before. So we can be a little snobby at times since we know where the bar of quality should exist for various features. Thankfully, the Evercross H5 Electric Scooter seems to do quite well with staying on our good side.
The build quality and design of the scooter is mostly on par with brands like Razor. So you should find that the durability and function might be quite familiar if this is where your expectations are or have experience with that brand. We found all of the materials to be perfect for both price point as well as our picky expectations.
Putting it together is simple since most of it comes ready to go. You just have to unfold a few things, lock them in place, screw the front light on, and then piece the seat/bar together and onto the scooter. From there on out, everything folds down so you can carry it around or store it.
The kickstand is durable and can maintain the weight of the scooter just fine. It has a nice headlight on the front and a brake light on the back. The back shield for the rear tire is indeed an alternative brake that you can step down on–when you don’t have the seat attached of course, and you are standing. Else there is a brake on the handlebar as well that you will mainly be using.
Weight capacity is impressive at up to 440 lbs, handling just about any adult-size human. You shouldn’t ever have any issues here unless you have two passengers, and this is only because it’s awkward and it is against the official scooter rules of things not to do on any scooter.
As for carrying it around, the weight of this one is a bit high. So you likely won’t be carrying it all over. You will likely be loading or unloading it into/from a vehicle or storage space. It is 52lbs, so the average person will likely avoid having to deal with walking around with that in their hands. A simple lift here or there into storage isn’t bad and the weight feels average for the level of scooter this is. We have even seen models heavier than this (at least, models that could reach this kind of speed and performance).
You have the option to disable it via a key as a secondary precaution to make sure no one is playing around with it while you are not in the immediate area. It has to still be turned on/off with a button beyond that and does auto timeout if not in use.
There is a screen to monitor your speed and everything with. You can see the speed mode you are in, battery life, and more. It isn’t the best brightness for a screen though, which seems to be a common thing with Evercross models. So reading it in the day won’t be as easy as reading it at night. You can adjust where you want the screen and everything to sit for the best comfort and to match your hand coordination between the throttle and the right brake lever.
The quality of the motor is fantastic. It is very quiet, very smooth, and so very fast. This places it right where it should be when comparing it to other scooters within that same price range like Razor’s E-XR.
It says up to 28mph, however, we were able to get it up to 30+ in perfect/flat conditions on a clear road. We took it around the backloading areas of our building as well as into nearby neighborhoods having a complete blast with it. It handles well and slows well. This would be a great scooter when you are looking to travel longer distances, let it be between neighborhoods or across the city (depending on the distance of course). You can travel a distance of up to 25 miles depending on the battery charge.
We did experience some scraping from the front wheel that appeared to be coming from the disc brake. We reached out to the company to see if this is a common issue or not. They were able to eventually share a quick solution to it. The solution was not the bolts on the side with the brake, but instead, you have to reach through the wheel from the other side to another bolt that’s on the other side of the brake system to add a little more space between the pad and the disc. This seemed to do the job. You can see this bolt in the image above, surrounded by a red piece of metal. A tricky little guy that your eyes might miss while playing around with everything.
It does come with all of the tools you will need to work on the scooter with. Everything is easy to get to, except for that before-mentioned bolt you have to access through the wheel on the other side since the wheel itself blocks a lot of your access (so that can get a little tricky). Everything else is simple and readily accessible.
Our Conclusion
In the end, we wound up really liking this scooter and thought it was a great comparison to something like (again) Razor’s E-XR, only with a seat. We could throw a few more comparisons out there, but that really makes the point clear based on all of the models we have played with from various companies.
Great for long distances and those looking for plenty of speed. The quality of materials and everything else is fantastic. The only issue we ran into was the scraping issue, but thankfully we were able to get rid of that with an adjustment. This would easily get a 9/10 score if we somehow knew that our experience with this needed fix was an isolated one.
We wish we had an E-XR to put side by side with this one to see which one would win in a 1/8th mile race on flat ground.
