Last month our team had an amazing and busy time at CES 2020, meeting many great people from around the world and seeing their new and innovative products. I’m finally back in the office with my first new product for the new year: The GooDee YG 620 Native 1080p LED Video Projector. Producing 6000 Lux brightness coupled with a 43″ to 300″ display size and a good sounding built-in speaker, it makes this a great home or office projector with a lot of input flexibility at an entry-level price. Let’s take a closer look!
On the Case
When you open the large-sized retail box you will notice the GooDee Projector is already zipped into its handy padded case. Inside you will also find the instruction manual, an AC power cable, an HDMI cable, an IR remote control, and finally; a video component cable to connect RCA video and audio outputs (yellow, red, and white) directly to the GooDee projector. The projector looks and feels full size with a very interesting design for the cabinet. Starting from the top you will find a black panel with an easy-to-operate manual focus lever and a set of control buttons. The button functions from left to right: Up, Down, Left, Right, Ok, and Return. Those are used to navigate the on-screen menus. You can do the same with the remote control as well as power on/off, Fast forward/reverse, menu shortcuts, signal source, and volume +/-. The manual power switch can be found on the back panel along with the inputs and output jacks. Those include from left to right: VGA input, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, 5V USB output, USB input, AV input (3.5mm jack works with an included patch cable or other 3.5 mm AV cable), 3.5 mm Audio output (headphones or speaker), and finally a Micro SD card slot (although I couldn’t I find any limit on the size of the SD card within the instructions or website). Additionally on the back, you will find the Keystone control knob to properly align your image on the screen. If you don’t have the projector connected to any external speaker system the internal 5-inch speaker is loud enough for most purposes indoors. Unlike the less expensive home use LED projectors the GooDee YG620 has IR receivers on the front and back of the unit so you won’t have to keep wondering if you are actually pointed the remote in the right direction. It works. The large lens has an equally large lens cover included. Notice that you will have to use the manual focus knob to return the lens to its closed position to get the lens cover to attach to the unit. On the right side of the GooDee projector, you will notice a removable panel. Behind that is a dust filter that can be removed for cleaning. You will also find a smaller removable panel on the back of the GooDee YG620 which can also be removed for cleaning. On the bottom of the projector, there is a push-button that releases a spring-loaded foot to which you can use to adjust the angle of the projector on your table. There are also 4 small screw holes to properly mount the GooDee projector to a ceiling mount plate or tripod. Let’s turn it on!
Turn me On
To set up the GooDee YG620 I plugged the projector’s power cord into my nearby wall plate. I first installed a 32GB USB memory stick with various video files and formats to play some files and set up the screen. Using the on-screen prompts it’s very easy to navigate between the various inputs so I also attached my Nintendo Classic Edition to the included HTML cable and HTML input 1. I used the 5V USB power output to power the game system and started playing while projecting onto my house. In city lights with a 16 ft diagonal footprint, the image was bright. As the image got larger it was obviously less bright but still really impressive for an entry-level unit at such a low price. If you had space in your backyard to make a 25 ft diagonal screen you could do it. I did my best to project that entire 300-inch diagonal image so I could speak to GooDee’s claims. Number one: You are going to need a lot of space. The light seems to be pretty evenly projected with no obvious light or dark spots. Once I had the screen in focus and the keystone properly aligned, I spent half the night playing video games with giant Mario and Luigi running around the screen. I also took some time skipping through various TV shows and movie clips on many Roku apps including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, and Disney+. Even outdoors the built-in speaker was pretty good at 75% volume. At 100% depending on the source and/or content: some distortion was heard. When using this GooDee YG620 outside for a backyard movie night, I’d suggest using additional reinforcement such as self-powered speakers, or even a small home PA. The rear power button has a red LED when powered up which blinks when you are using the remote control.
Ess Dee USB Media And More
Utilizing the USB or SD Card inputs, the GooDee YG620 LED Projector plays the following formats: Audio: MP3, WMA, OGG, AAC, FLAC, APE, WAV. Photos: JPEG, BMP, PNG. Video: 3GP, AVI, MKV, FLV(FLV), MOV, MP4, MPG, VOB, FMVB, RM. The YG 620 also supports TXT files (sure, why not). It’s easy to access the files in your storage devices with the on-screen multi-media interface by simply choosing the file type and then the files by name.
Some Last Minute Points
For those who are new to projection equipment: A replacement HID bulb can actually cost you more than you spent on the projector. According to GooDee, the 6000 LUX LED bulb can last up to 55,000 hours or 5 hours a day for 15 years! The enclosed fans are very quiet, and the built-in speaker is passable for a living room, small classroom, or breakout session setting without any need for additional reinforcement. Finally, GooDee offers you 5 months free return for full refund & replacement and 5-year free repair. Lifetime professional customer service & Technical support. 7/24 comprehensive service Let’s wrap this up!
The Final Thoughts:
I was very impressed with the amount of professional and actually useful features included in the design of the GooDee YG620 Native 1080p LED Projector. The contemporary design coupled with a very bright long-lasting LED light source would be a great addition to any family or small business needs. There is a plethora of video source inputs as well as an RCA AV adapter for old-school input devices and video game systems. The unit plays a lot of audio, video, and other file types using the multimedia interface. The GooDee YG620 LED Projector is very easy to operate with the onboard control panel or the handy remote control and with the addition of a few simple AV input devices anyone could quickly and easily be running a PowerPoint lecture in the office or classroom while at home you can have that indoor movie theater or outdoor drive-in movie feeling at a very reasonable price. 9 out of 10 for a very cool-looking and well-appointed entry-level Native 1080p LED Projector. I can’t wait to see more from GooDee in the near future!
