Review: Samsung 55-Inch 1080p 120Hz Smart LED TV (UN55H6350)

Yet another great TV by Samsung, the 55-inch UN55H6350 delivers that great image you’d expect from a TV sold by one of the top manufacturers the market has to offer. Perfectly placed in between the low budget selection and the top of the line 1080 lines, the H6350 series finds itself in a neutral category, both affordable but not lacking where it counts.

The first thing we did when we got our hands on it, was run a few of our favorite calibration tests to determine the best settings for image quality. It didn’t take much effort. Right out of the box, image quality seems slightly above standard, but once you get to tweaking, this model/series can really shine. You can browse online yourself to find various calibration tests you can download and use (most allow you to download an iso image and burn it to a disc that you can use to walk you through various calibrations).

Image quality (after our adjustments) landed this TV right where it needed to be. TV stations broadcasted in HD looked great, while standard definition channels looked no worse than any other decent or better TV. We watched the New York Rangers take on the Florida Panthers yesterday as the Rangers took the Panthers 6 to 3 while never once losing sight of that tiny little puck (we know how to have our fun benchmarking products when they come in). Details were clean, and there were no troubles with the refresh rate.

The refresh is 120hz (240 Clear Motion Rate). You do get the soap opera effect, but this can be adjusted by changing the mode/profile like most TVs today (you can also disable Auto Motion Plus if needed). This also applies to playing video games to eliminate the lag that you find in LED models (switch it to PC mode for best response).

Gaming with this TV was not a drag at all. From adventure to first-person-shooters (FPS), it didn’t fail for a second. In PC mode, the input lag was low while playing on a connected Playstation 4, and didn’t seem to affect our “skills” the slightest bit.

We broke out Guardians of the Galaxy on Blu-ray, which resulted in all the same quality results and then some. Blu-ray movies tend to look really nice on most Samsung TVs (as well as LG). Everything was sharp, no motion trails, and the colors were rich with dark blacks. Again, everything was right where it needed to be.

This is not a 3D model, so we didn’t do any testing with such. If you are looking for 3D, you may want to try the H6400 series, which is just a small step up from the H6350. The model we are reviewing today is a focus for those not looking for that extra dimension. We still haven’t been too impressed with 3D in TVs just yet. For us, true 3D doesn’t happen until you reach the holographic state (which is finally becoming possible thanks to new advances in technology, such as the Microsoft HoloLens).

Online functionality is great. It is Samsung after all (they do have the largest app market and mobile device compatibility for their TVs). The app menu isn’t always the fastest, but they rarely are on TVs anyway. We didn’t feel any frustration wow browsing around, opening apps or streaming video. Watching videos on Netflix or YouTube did not result in any lag or skipping. It can connect to the internet via WiFi (built-in) or ethernet.

Now, taking a turn into the direction of sound, it is nice to point out that this TV doesn’t do bad at all. It’s a TV, and with a TV, you expect basic small drivers buried in plastic sound to come from it. It doesn’t disappoint here, as it delivers just that. Only it seems a bit better than the average set, as the volume is clear and can get pretty loud before distortion sets in. You can even take advantage of the “amplify” option in the menu to take it further, while still not distorting. As usual, it’s not going to replace a soundbar or receiver, but it will be sufficient for any of your basic audio needs.

The speakers are located on the back of the TV, so you can get even more volume out of it when mounted as they will reflect off of the wall behind it. This will also cause the sound to feel a little “brighter” as well (this being an advantage or disadvantage depends on your listening preferences).

The UN55H6350 is relatively light in weight, making it easy to move around or mount on the wall. It weighs in around 35-40lbs depending on if you have the stand attached or not.

Like most of today’s TVs, it is very energy efficient. It draws an average of about 50watts when on, and only 0.3watts while in standby (off).

The remote that comes with is the basic Samsung remote you find with most TVs (not the smart one with voice control that you find with the more expensive models). The TV *does* support motion, but it requires you to purchase a camera that is sold separately (we don’t recommend it though, as its more of a gimmick than anything else, unless it is built-in).

Although we have reviewed the 55-inch model, the series ranges between 32-inches and 75-inches, leaving room for any situation. A total of 8 models to choose from. Any link provided to the 55-inch that we have provided in this review will also allow you to look at the other sizes as well.

Our Conclusion

It’s a great TV, with all the features one would normally look for outside of 3D. Image quality is where it should be and it puts out more than enough sound for a TV of its size. All the apps are there and the menus move at a good speed. Really, if you are looking for something in the middle (or better) without spending too much, the UN55H6350 is a good model to consider. We decided to give it an 8.5 out of 10. A good score, for a good TV.
