Dashlane is making a transition this year, moving away from its app to focus on just browser extensions. The new change will result in the elimination of their desktop app altogether, which means a huge overhaul for the extensions between now and then.
For those who are well time-invested into using the service, this may raise concern. However, they seem to be working hard to make sure that the extensions somehow offer all of the same features that the desktop app has. Including biometric access, which is important when companies like Microsoft are putting a lot of pressure on biometric access to information. This will also be interesting since there hasn’t been a lot of browser extensions that have tried to offer biometric access.
Hopefully, they do plan to make the extensions talk to each other when it comes to sessions. That way, those who use multiple browsers aren’t having to log in to Dashlane multiple times on the same system every time they want to use it (since the app acted as a somewhat centralized login).
As for the downside of things, this means they have little to no plans on ever supporting password management outside of websites on desktops. This means your apps and programs will continue to require manual input–unlike the partial support you find for apps within Android or iOS mobile environments, which makes for a nice feature. It would have been nice to see a desktop password manager extend past the browser.
They are looking to accomplish this transition by Q3 2021. If you are already using their extensions within your browsers, then you should be set for when the change happens. If you are only using their desktop app, you’ll have to install the extensions for continued use of the Dashlane service.
