Pirated software has always come with risks for users looking to acquire things over the internet. Mainly, it is illegal, to begin with, thus one should never even try downloading such software. In addition to this, many of these applications, games, and other materials come with hidden surprises that can wreck your day.
So finding out that a new trojan has slipped its way into pirated software is no surprise as it happens all the time. This just seems to be one that has taken off recently, causing issues for both Windows and MacOS users alike (even Android).
It was discovered by security researchers to be hidden within modified installers that inject malicious code (trojan) into a users system without their knowledge. This will then create the necessary means to create a backdoor giving attackers administrative privileges into that system. The attacker can then use this access to run various commands or include the infected system as part of a larger network for attacking other websites and services.
There have been multiple versions of the same trojan discovered thus far and it has been found across all sorts of malicious websites hosting pirated contents. Yet another reminder (just one of many) that you should think twice before downloading a pirated application. Consider the risk that comes with such activities and weigh it against how much something would have cost you to simply pay for it.
