Just in case you thought your phone or tablet didn’t have enough capacity yet, you may now soon have the ability to have just as much as a high-end laptop or PC bought in a store.
One of the many things announced this week at MWC 2019 (Mobile World Congress) by Western Digital (who bought SanDisk back in 2015) was a 1TB microSD card that will be launching this April. The new card will offer read speeds up to 160 MB/s and write speeds of up to 90 MB/s, similar to the performance of SanDisk’s full-size Extreme Pro SD cards. So a big boost in capacity with a decent boost in speed as well, helping to reduce load an search times as you access all of that information on your device.
It will cost you around $450, making it a costly expense, with a 512GB option falling around $200. So it will be a good few years before they become a bit more affordable to the average consumer, but those who just can’t wait to burn the cash on something cool will have the chance at expanding their storage in just over a month.
Western Digital isn’t alone as Micron also announced a 1TB card that will be releasing around the same time. Its read/write speeds aren’t as impressive yet still impressive enough (100 MB/s and 95 MB/s). There is no pricing information just yet, but you can expect that they will be close to the SanDisk models.
With as many phones and tablets that can dock to a hub for extended desktop-like use, it really won’t be long before laptops are a thing of the past. From versatility to mobile friendly to just as much capacity, eventually all we will ever need is the phone in our pocket. I mean, what else are you going to do with all of that space?
