Alexa and Google continue to lead the way in the realm of smart speakers and digital assistants with companies like Apple trailing behind trying to keep up. These companies push the limits of modern technology to attempt to deliver the closest things possible to what one could perceive as “AI” in a world where it still has a long way to go. The result is a product that is more than capable of having a positive impact on your daily life. Even when it comes to the simplest of things like listening to your favorite music.
Except for some reason, no matter how smart these assistants become, they still lack some basic features you’d think someone would have thought about by now. Like the ability to transfer/move what you are listening to, to another location/speaker. I mean, you can call music up with a simple voice command and even broadcast it around the house on multiple speakers. However, if you start at one speaker and then want to move to another location, you used to have to stop play and trigger it freshly on the next Alexa device. This means losing your place in the track you were listening to or having to start with a completely new track even though you were quite enjoying the one you were listening to (ie, Pandora and other platforms similar to it).
Now, this isn’t an issue–finally. Amazon has delivered a new update to Alexa devices that allow you to move from one location to the next. It isn’t as simple as “Alexa, move to [name of speaker]” for whatever reason, but it isn’t so bad either. You just have to remember two commands.
- Current device/speaker: “Alexa, pause” (or “pause music”)
- Next devices/speaker: “Alexa, resume here” (or “resume music here”)
Doing so, will pause the music in one location and pick it back up via another speaker (on the same account, of course) while not losing your place in what you were listening to.
Well, that wasn’t so hard, was it Amazon? Finally, the ability to move around the house without losing what you were listening to. It’s a simple feature, but it goes a long way. Alexa has been able to do so much with music, thus something as simple as this seems as though it was completely missed in the thought process of everything. It’s ok though now. Now excuse me, while I go resume what I was listening to a moment ago in the other room. “Alexa,…”
