Atari has finally launched the long-awaited Atari VCS Gaming System. A unique entertainment experiencing that also doubles as a PC. A console that some consumers have been waiting for since it was originally announced back in June 2017. Since then, there has been a series of delays along the way which didn’t sit well with the original backers behind the crowdfunding stages. However, the wait is over, and the Atari VCS is now slowly making its way to retailers.
The console comes with more than 100 classic games to play, right out of the box. This alone could make the average consumer weary since the price tag starts at $299 ($299 for just the console, or $399 for the kit with controllers). However, its function doesn’t stop there. The console also allows future game installs, access to popular online streaming solutions to watch movies and TV in up to 4K, and the unique ability to double as a PC.
The latter of which, allows you to install an OS of your choice, including Windows, Linux, or even ChromeOS. This allows you to use the console as a normal PC, installing applications, browsing the web, and so forth. You get the ability to switch between Atari Mode and PC Mode.
Inside is an AMD Ryzen R1606G processor with AMD Radeon graphics that is powering it all, turning a gaming console into a powerful little mini PC.
At the moment, it is still making its way to stores, although the full kit seems to be available at Best Buy right now, which will likely be the focus of most gamers anyway. The ability to own the console along with the classic-style (but wireless) controllers.
It’s hard to say if this will have an effect on the never-ending tension within the market caused by so many consumers trying to get their hands on the new Xbox or PlayStation consoles. However, it at least opens an opportunity for the older crowd to keep themselves occupied with the classics until the other consoles become easier to find.
