The doorbell cam war continues as August has enhanced their services by adding a free option for cloud storage. Normally you would face a $5/month fee for 30-day cloud storage access with free 6-month access for new customers), but they are now also giving Doorbell Cam Pro customers the opportunity to take advantage of this new free option that gives them 24-hour access to the same content.
Thanks to companies like Blink (who was recently acquired by Amazon, who also later gobbled up Ring), there has been a price war on cloud services. Companies like Ring brought the price down to around $3 per camera ($9.99 for unlimited cameras), but then Blink said they would offer their cloud services at no monthly cost. Their doorbell doesn’t have the same resolution and all of the same features within the app, but free is a pretty enticing word. So it seems August is the next to offer a free option. Although 24-hours isn’t exactly mind boggling, it does provide a better option than, well, not free. All other doorbell cam manufacturers generally offer free live-view, but that’s about it (no storage of videos that allow you to go back and view them later).
If you are an August customer that has also acquired some of their other devices, such as the August Lock, you will be able to control everything from the same app by checking out who’s at the door, and unlocking it to let them in remotely if they are family (or say a house or pet sitter).
