Another great deal has been found for this holiday season. Best Buy is currently offering (link) an 8TB external USB 3.0 hard drive from Western Digital (WD) for a low price of only $139.99. It looks like this will more than likely become a discontinued item due to the newer “WD 8TB My Book” model WD has. Therefore their clearing of the stock is your win. Normally the drive ran around $189-$239, marking this one of the best prices yet for it.
Although it may not compare to the performance of the Seagate 8TB drive that won our Editors’ Choice award this year, it does offer you the option to expand your backup capabilities for a lower price. Either drive option will help to deliver this while the Seagate simply offers greater transfer rates. Both companies offer great track records for being a the top of the charts for consumer storage.
Of course, if you are looking for a simpler solution that doesn’t require plugging power into the wall, you also have the Black-edition Passport drives by WD that offer a much smaller profile and get their power directly from the USB connection to your computer or device. This latter option is perfect for gaming consoles and bringing a large amount of data with you on the road. The only downside of this option is that you won’t find an affordable option with 8TB for this size/type of drive. It would be closer to 4TB when comparing prices.
