The release of classic console remakes has been a hot ticket item since the NES Classic was so difficult to keep on the shelves (mostly due to supply shortages, but difficult nonetheless). Since then, you have a huge selection of options like NES, SNES, Sega, Atari and more. Now, you can add the Commodore 64 to the mix as well thanks to Retro Games Ltd.
The Commodore 64 (also known as C64) dates back to 1982, a time where most of us here (Poc) were just born or not even in existence yet. It was an 8-bit computer that only had 64 kB of memory. It dominated the market in the 80’s and an extremely long list of applications and games were developed for it. It was so popular, you can easily find someone today who used to have one (way back when) that will still brag about how cool it was for its time. Because of this, it had quite the following, so of course it would also be a prime target for the new craze.
Now you can sample it for yourself with the new C64 Mini, which like the other classic consoles, has a library of games built-in for your to choose from. There are 64 (a fitting number) different games it comes loaded with, and offers to output them at 720p to your TV via HDMI. You are able to save your place in the games and it can be updated via the USB flash drives. It comes with a single joystick and you can buy a second so that you can play with a friend. They connect to the C64 Mini via USB, where you can also connect a USB keyboard to use it as a computer–the console itself is dressed up to look like a Commodore 64 keyboard, but it’s keys are just for show.
Part of the update feature it supports via USB, you can also add your own games, demos, utilities and more, expanding on the Mini, allowing it to truly take on the presence of the original system but with a modern twist.
The C64 Mini is available as we speak, although Amazon currently shows it as not available. So they might be releasing it in controlled bursts like Nintendo did, or possibly it is selling that quickly. Either way, you can add your name to the list as Amazon still allows you to purchase it, and you will become one of the first to get one when supply is restocked.
