California is going to be one of the forerunners in the US to press forward to a cleaner future when it comes to what cars will be on the road. This should come as no surprise for most, but it is happening and it will happen relatively fast. Of course, most of the manufacturers have already started the transition themselves, thus it shouldn’t be too hard for such changes to be adhered to.
This is no surprise since parts of Europe have already announced efforts to push forward with the same restrictions. That and California is notorious for adopting legislation like this before anyone else. Soon after, additional states will eventually join in.
The idea is to ban the sale of (new) gas vehicles as of 2035. This means that by 2035 you won’t be able to purchase a new gas vehicle from dealerships and manufacturers will no longer be making them. The latter of which is something that has already been in the works, as we have seen with Ford’s latest changes to its lineup.
There has been such a heavy push toward EVs as the replacement for gas (ICE) vehicles. While there is also a little interest in alternative options that we haven’t quite seen roll out just yet (and will likely become the BETA vs VHS of environmentally friendly options thanks to the mass adoption of EV charging stations nationwide). Gas vehicles have already begun a transition to becoming a dying breed.
Once this change gains approval from the EPA, you will likely see it become more widely adopted elsewhere (and again, this is something you should easily have seen coming). Now there is just the concern about the price difference between gas and EV vehicles. This is the only thing making adoption difficult for most consumers.
