Remember that nifty little dock that Samsung developed that allowed you to use your fancy Samsung Galaxy smartphone as sort of a mobile computer? It was limited of course, running a “DeX” mode of the Samsung Galaxy’s OS on the connected screen, giving you the ability to open certain apps in multiple windows and remote access your other computers with.
I can’t say a lot of people jumped on that bandwagon. The same thing happened with Microsoft’s approach when they launched their Lumia 950XL as one of the first smartphones to be able to provide a limited desktop to a connected screen (sadly, nobody bought the phone, to begin with).
However, that didn’t stop Samsung from moving forward with it. With the new Samsung Galaxy Note S10 and S10+, you can now do the same using any USB-C to HDMI cable. No dock needed. Just connect the cable and you’re ready to go.

It also doesn’t stop there though, as they still have a dock solution in mind, and it’s centered around mobile police vehicles. It is their new “DeX in Vehicle” option that allows officers to use their Samsung Galaxy phone as the computer that drives the dash-mounted screen and keyboard. All they have to do is climb into their vehicle, plug the phone into the dock, and access all of their normal police applications.
By using this method, officers can easily take their work in our outside of the car, in just the palm of their hand. Not having to carry a laptop around that could weigh them down, and potentially saving the department a lot of money.
The Chicago Police Department will be Samsung’s first customer who will be piloting the new solution, initially rolling out within their 11th district. If it proves worthy, you might just see all the departments jumping on board in the near future.
