It might be time for Samsung to either move over and step up already thanks to companies that are hot on their tail. NVMe is finally beginning to become a lot more consumer-friendly thanks to companies releasing a new product with price tags more familiar to the SATA SSD solutions we have been so familiar with this past so many years. Capacities between 480GB and 512GB are starting to appear within the $120-$150 range. Not only is this great for average Joes looking to build a killer system without breaking the bank, but you know this is going to affect the SATA SSD market as well.
At first, Western Digital was one of the only few that stepped in to help create a price war, but now Corsair is coming out swinging with their new MP300 NVMe M.2 series as well. The new MP300 drives promise read speeds of up to 1,600 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,040 MB/s, and come with a capacity range between 120 GB and 960 GB. They aren’t as fast as some of Samsung’s options, but they would still be a major improvement over your standard SATA SSD (especially if you are coming from an older spinning HDD).
Prices start as low as $49.99, depending on what store or website you are shopping on, and work their way up to $319.99. I say depending on the site or store since their website lists them at these prices (however, it shows as not in stock), while Amazon shows them in stock but for a price tag nearly twice as much–assuming they are either referring to the higher price as a pre-order cost or somebody made a typo (hopefully). This assumption comes from the fact that Corsair doesn’t seem to have officially released them for shipment just yet. They also back them with a 5-year warranty which earns them a bit of kudos.
