A new action camera is making its way into the world from DJI that takes the place of the DJI Osmo Action, The new DJI Action 2 (no more Osmo in the name) comes with a number of interesting features that allow it to find its place in the options currently available, setting it apart in its own unique ways.
Its most interesting feature is the fact that it is modular using magnets. It isn’t the first time this has been done on an action camera, but it seems to have been delivered nicely this round.
There are a number of options that can snap into place. Consider the many accessories you’d find for the GoPro cameras, only these use strong magnets instead of threaded mounts. So you can attach the camera in a number of ways, including to certain threaded options similar to GoPro accessories.
Action 2 comes within two kits options, including one that comes with a battery expansion module (Power Combo) that extends use to up to three hours (total). The Power Combo retails for $399. The other option comes with a module that contains a front-facing touch display and extends the battery to up to 160 minutes (less than three hours, but this is because it is now powering two screens. That kit retails for $519.
The touchscreen on the back (and the front-facing module) features a 1.76” OLED display with Gorilla Glass to protect from scratching or minor crack scenarios.
You can record at up to 4K@120p with 1080 up to 240fps (155 deg FOV) with a 12MP sensor. It has similar features exist that you typically find in modern action cams, including image stabilization, time-lapse, hyperlapse, slow motion, and water resistance (including an optional waterproof case).
It supports live streaming and can also double as a webcam. You get microSD slots for expanding capacity and more. The camera is also incredibly lightweight compared to your average webcam (incredibly).
The dual-screen combo will start shipping around November 2nd and is available for pre-order now from a few places like B&H Photo/Video, while the Power Combo will be launching later in the month (also available for preorder from B&H Photo/Video). There will also be plenty of optional accessories shipping around mid-November, including a macro lens that slaps right onto the front.
