There are more options out there to choose from the GoPro when it comes to Action Cameras. The one fallacy that people tend to fall for, is the best is always what they see on TV. Yet, there are plenty of other products that never reach that level of marketing (at least, not yet).
For example, Sony is about to release a 4K version of their action cam next month. There is also a chinese knockoff of the GoPro that is doing pretty well (we will discuss this coming soon), and Contour has their Contour+2.
However, for the moment, we are going to take a look at the Ghost-S by Drift Innovations. Another 1080p action camera with a solid frame rate and stability that makes a difference. Well, that’s what everybody else says at least! We haven’t had a chance to sit down with one, but the specs are in at least, which allows us to take a peak at our options.
Video:
- 1080p up to 60fps (frames per second)
- 960p up to 60 fps
- 720p up to 120fps
- Slow Shutter Mode for improved low-light performance
Images:
- Up to 12MP (mega-pixels)
- Time-lapse settings from 0.5 seconds per image to 1 minute
- Up to 10 fps burst mode
So far, so good. The camera has a Sony CMOS sensor and 7-element aspherical lens, giving it a “clear” (pun) position against the competition. It has a rotatable lens, allowing you to easily adjust the angle of the camera based on user preferences or how it is attached.
The camera is waterproof up to 9 feet by itself. That isn’t too impressive, but then you have to remember that’s by itself. Then you can throw on a housing (shell) and it gets better from there. Just like the GoPro, only you can’t throw the GoPro without a shell into any depth of water.
It has both a built-in Gorrilla Glass LCD display to view the camera live, as well as a two-way remote to control it wirelessly without the need of connecting a smartphone and app. It comes with a number of other features such as Car DVR, Clone and Low-Light mode. It also has a battery life of up to 3.5 hours, 10x digital zoom, HDMI out and a mic extension cable. It also supports all the familiar types of bands, mounts and clips that you expect any action camera to do.
The Clone Mode especially seems like a fun feature as it allows you to control up to four cameras together from a single camera. That should sound relatively fascinating to anyone searching for a good action cam. Kind of makes me want to grab for and test it out right away. Sadly someone somewheres would be disappointed in me if four action cameras randomly popped up on the company account without permission.
Drift has been picking up a lot of steam with their cameras and the Ghost-S is making the most for reputation. You can find it on Amazon and a few other online locations.
