There are a lot of solutions to filter water at home. From simple approaches like the Brita containers/filters to installing a reverse osmosis (RO) option for your home or simply just at the sink. You can also get refillable 5-gallon bottles for a water machine from a nearby water store or delivery service. A new company, however, is looking to provide an RO-like solution that does more than just deliver clean water.
Rocean is a company that exhibited within the Eureka Park during CES 2020. Their product, the Rocean One. A smart sustainable filter device that can bring you clean drinking water, with the added ability to choose for it to be carbonated or even flavored if you wanted. Their idea is to not only bring you clean drinking water with options but to also reduce plastic bottle waste.
Like a normal RO solution, it connects directly to your tap water at a sink. It uses carbon block filtration to filter your water and get rid of “99% of a multitude of contaminants (here’s a list), including the most dangerous such as asbestos, cysts, industrial chemicals, heavy metals like lead and mercury, and microplastics”. The only thing it lacks is the ability to make a big dent on fluoride. They ruled out the concern of this for some reason (they feel it isn’t much of a concern).
The filter inside does require changing, however they say that the average home would only have to swap it out around once per year. It will automatically let you know when the time has come.

If all you need is basic clean water, it can provide you with however much you like. However, it features a touch-screen system that allows you to customize it for carbonation and/or flavoring using small pods that insert into the machine (bought separately). This means you don’t have to buy bottles of water from the store no matter what style piques your interest. Each of these pods is supposed to provide you with up to 48 bottles of flavored water. The CO2 canister can provide up to 30x the capacity of a 17oz bottle of sparkling water. So you can get a lot out of each run compared to spending so much money in the store buying each in bottled form.
It doesn’t chill the water, so you would have to capture it in larger containers and store it in the fridge if you prefer ice cold. It pours at around 55 degrees (F) on average if taking it straight from the device.
They say it is a perfect solution for both homes and businesses, so they likely have different capacity options for the replaceable pods and CO2 (maybe even different style machines). For now, it hasn’t even launched yet to say for sure. They plan to launch sometime in the spring (2020). For more information, you can visit their website (www.rocean.com)
