Ford is pulling the plug on its NACS charging adapters (for use with Tesla Superchargers) for a minute as it takes a look into potential dangers that are related to their use with Ford vehicles. The company has officially started a recall in an effort to prevent customers from any related risks.
The adapters were offered for free by the company so that their customers could take advantage of the ever-growing Supercharger network. Like most companies, Ford has taken the NACS connection on as an industry default, thus these adapters allow older-generation vehicles to take part, as new vehicles will feature NACS connections natively starting sometime next year.
However, it looks like these adapters are causing potential problems, including shortening the life of the vehicle’s charging speeds, or even damaging the charging port. Meanwhile, a replacement part is in the works and the company expects to begin shipping them out to customers in the near future.
Ford is asking its customers to send the defective units in so that continued use of them can be prevented. Also, this will help prevent a bunch of broken adapters from being found on (the) road dead. — See what I did there?
It seems the company failed to provide necessary protections when it comes to adapting the NACS specifications. Either that, or faulty parts or manufacturing could be leading to dangerous outcomes. At least, the company is taking credit for the mistake and is looking to resolve the issue. An exact time frame hasn’t been announced, but Ford has mentioned that a replacement will be made available in the coming weeks.
