Since Tesla’s NACS (North American Charging Standard) connection was made into a standard, other EV companies have been rushing to get an adapter out into the world so that their customers can use the various Supercharger locations available around the US. Now GM customers are included as the company has launched its adapter via its app(s).
There are over 2,000 Supercharger locations around the US and that number continues to grow steadily. Greatly outnumbering many of the alternative options out there when you consider the total number of stalls between all of the locations. So it would make since to get an adapter to your customers as quickly as possible.
Although “quickly” wouldn’t be the best word to describe the rollout for GM, options are popping up, and this adds to the number of EV owners who can relax a little when it comes to finding a nearby charger. The new adapter from GM will run users $225, and can be found via the GM vehicle’s mobile app. While in the future, newer vehicles will offer the NACS connection natively, thus no adapter will be needed. So this is simply just a retrofit for older vehicles.
Supercharger locations will be included when searching for nearby charging locations. This way users won’t have to make use of multiple apps. A smart move on GM’s part and likely one that most EV manufacturers will do as part of their integration.
