If you had any experience with the old Windows Mobile devices, you might remember an app called Grooveshark. It featured an interesting option that allowed you to hum to it so that you can figure out a song that was stuck in your head. It would try to identify it with some pretty decent accuracy. However, one day it vanished as it didn’t support the latest version of the OS and the feature never came back to the app.
Grooveshark is actually still around, but the app isn’t nearly as fun (IMO) as when it offered this feature, and good luck finding another app that could do it really well. Until now at least. Google has added this as an amazing new feature (one that should have been added a long time ago) to Google Assistant on mobile devices.
Simply ask Google Assistant “What is this song?” and it will switch to a new screen where it will begin listening to your voice. At this point, you simply hum the song that is stuck in your head and it will try to guess it. Thankfully, it seems to do it with a decent level of accuracy. It does make mistakes and it cannot always compensate for your inability to keep a proper note. However, from our use of it thus far, we can confidently say that it does a pretty good job all around.
So what are you waiting for? Break out your Google Assistant app’s mic icon and get your hum on. See for yourself how useful it is going to be in the future the next time you are so badly trying to remember a song while explaining something to a friend.
