The HDMI Forum is almost always at CES in Las Vegas each year, showing off the latest technology that the connectivity standard brings or will bring to the table as it evolves. Now, it is set to return next month in 2025 with announcements surrounding the upcoming HDMI 2.2 spec.
Starting January 6th, it will host a press conference covering these announcements. Then, it will be featured in an exhibit space within the popular Central Hall of the LVCC (Las Vegas Convention Center), where attendees will be able to discuss the upcoming features of the new generation of HDMI.
As always, you can expect to see support for higher resolutions and refresh rates, likely taking 4K to 240Hz to keep up with DisplayPort, and 8K into the 240Hz range (unless they stalemate it at 120Hz). There is always the chance that it may go further than that, but this seems to be a reasonable point to land within while still being competitive with DP.
If the new standard is announced, it will still be some time before we see the technology within the devices we buy. Cables will likely be some of the first things you’ll gain access to, with hardware potentially being many months away, if not longer for devices that take advantage of the max capabilities of the specs. Monitors are just now starting to embrace resolutions like 4K@240Hz since DIsplayPort 2.1 supports it, but NVIDIA cards will just now be supporting that spec in 2025 for the first time (while AMD has a few options that support this).
