We took some time to speak with Larry Goldman (interview below) with Kwikset about the latest of their smart deadbolt locks. The Kwikset 916 which functions as a touchscreen version of their previous model we have spoke about in the past (which used buttons), offers all of the same features and benefits as the previous model did, only it also has a touchscreen that feels natural to the touch, offers a completely blacked out screen when not in use, and a security measure to make sure nobody can determine the pattern or collection of keys that you hit.
It uses random numbers every time you hit the screen to light up the controls, where you have to touch those two numbers before you can move onto entering your code. It doesn’t matter which order you touch the two numbers in. Each time, the set of numbers changes. By doing this, it keeps all areas of the screen in use so that no specific group of numbers is singled out (making it harder to guess your code, even if you have a gadget that is able to read the heat signature of recently pressed spots).
Just like the previous model, the deadbolt is Z-wave compatible. We have spoken about Z-wave many times (example: How To Save Money And Make Your House More Energy Efficient). Z-wave is one of the most popular forms of home automation due there being no fees involved to keep it working if you use the right hub/controller (ie, Vera Controller). This allows you your deadbolt to interact with other things in your home and vice versa.
It is not required to have a Z-wave network setup, as the lock can function fully by itself.
The Kwikset 916 deadbolt is currently available online at places like Amazon, and falls within one of the top three smart deadbolts currently on the market.
