A great way to sort out any lighting issues with storage cabinets, closet or crawl space used to store all of those favorite games and movies with; is battery operated LEDs. With today’s LED technology, you get a lot of light out of a single load of batteries and some lights even come with their own built in rechargeable solution.
That being said, I wanted to briefly touch on these motion-activated LED lights that iClever sent us recently. The model series is “OxyLED” and there are two sizes to work with, both small and large. I have worked with many “affordable” solutions in the past installing them in closets around the house as well as cabinets in kitchens and bathrooms where light doesn’t seem to reach as well. Most of the ones I have worked with are battery operated, either lasted a decent amount of time or failed within a few weeks and put out an average amount of light that didn’t always suit my needs. When we received these lights from iClever, I was quick to take on the story because I wouldn’t mind finding a solution for myself to fulfill these needs with.
Since then, we have been playing with these lights for some time now, getting a lot of use out of them and haven’t replaced the batteries or charge yet. They offer a pleasing amount of light and both models feature a magnetic strip across the back for easily detaching them so that you can get to them for maintenance (swapping batteries, recharging or using them elsewhere).
These would work great for storage solutions for those who make use of their closets or den crawl space for storing their movies, games and other goodies. Areas where you don’t have electricity ran and don’t know or what to go through with the process of doing such a task.
The magnetic strip across the back features 3M double-stick tape on one side for applying it to any flat surface. Once you have applied it, the light(s) simply attach directly to the magnet, filling the impression on the back of the light designed specifically for the magnet. Now it can be easily popped on and off the magnet at your will.
The motion sensor (small round dome in the middle of the face) works great and is made for dark environments, giving it a dual purpose. So this is why they are best used for those areas where light doesn’t quite reach too well (or at all). If any major light is making its way to the sensor, the light will not fire on from motion as it assumes you don’t need it, thus saving your battery life. However, if you were to put it in a hallway and walk through that hallway in the dark of night with only a simple ambient-evening glow from windows or nightlights, it will trigger and illuminate your way effectively.
The smaller of the two lights is powered by four AAA batteries that you shouldn’t have to change out that often. It is about 7.5-inches in length and works great for small to medium storage (or similar) spaces. The battery door is located on the side and the body of the light is mostly comprised of aluminum, making it feel quite durable. The light face and sensor are plastic. There is no on/off switch unfortunately, so if you want to disable it for any reason, you do have to open the battery hatch to break contact with the batteries.
You can find the smaller model on Amazon for for just $10.99 — Buy it here
The larger model is just slightly more than 14-inches in length and features it’s own built-in rechargeable battery source. On one side of the unit there is a micro-USB port for charging it with and it does come with the cable for doing so. It does not come with a wall adapter, so it will either need to be plugged into a USB port (such as on a computer) or you will have to find a wall adapter from mobile device you may already have laying around). The opposite side of the light contains an on/off switch, which is a bonus. Like its little brother, it is also mostly made of aluminum with plastic for the light surface, sensor and sides. This light is great for medium to larger storage (or equivalent) spaces.
You can find this larger model on Amazon for around the low $20’s typically — Buy it here
So if you’re in the need of such lighting, make sure to give these two lights a try. They really are worth the money and provide a good amount of light. I myself will be looking into them for the future to replace some of mine with around the house.
