Belkin is bringing an end to its Wemo series of smart home products, including smart switches, plugs, and more. The company will be pulling the plug on January 31st, 2026, marking the EOL (end of life) for the series.
Not only will this mark the EOL for the series, but the company will also be pulling the plug on the cloud services and the Wemo apps. This means that many of the products will stop working when it comes to connected smart features, like remote operation or automations. Affecting many of the products (but not all).
Some of the products that support Apple’s Home Kit or the new Thread protocol will still continue to operate since their functionality is not dependent on the Belkin/Wemo cloud services. So users can continue to make use of these devices. However, for those devices that do depend on the cloud, they will only function as a physical on/off dumb switch/plug.
This is an unfortunate example of what happens when you replace “dumb” devices with smart/connected alternatives that require the cloud to operate. The same thing applies to certain video games and other products that are dependent on access to similar services. All of these products eventually become a brick when the company eventually pulls the plug.
Thankfully, as mentioned, some of the newer models did support Thread and Home Kit, allowing you to continue using them. At this point, this should be considered a requirement for these expensive products, as you should be able to continue using them somehow. If they don’t support something like Thread, users should be able to flash them with custom firmware so they can adapt them to a new ecosystem somehow.
