VR fans can rejoice at the idea that they no longer need to have a Facebook account in order to register their Quest VR devices. Facebook (oops, I mean Meta) has finally rolled out its Meta accounts that allow users to sign up with a standalone Meta profile.
The news was announced by Meta this week and users can now start migrating their accounts over. Emails were also sent out to current users with instructions on how to make the transition. Users can still register using their Facebook accounts, as well as Instagram. However, these options are, well, optional.
With the transition, you gain a Meta Horizon profile, along with a name in addition to your username that can be changed anytime. Users can also control how they are seen online, similar to Facebook (ie, public, vs friends and family, or private, etc).
Current Oculus account users will be able to continue using their accounts as is through the end of the year. At that time, they will be forced to make the transition if they haven’t done so already.
Now, if only the company could work a little harder at creating a truly immersive experience online for social communication that doesn’t involve creepy avatars. While also focusing less on asking for so much sensitive information that it tracks.
