Microsoft announced a few days ago that the upcoming Windows 10 will fully support the new HEVC (H.265) and MKV video formats. This is important just as much as it is expected since the industry is making a major push to the new HEVC format to enhance the quality of streamed video while being able to support higher resolutions such as 4K. This will also help with reducing file sizes for locally digital (backed-up) copies within your personal library.
This will improve support for the formats across all applications installed on a Windows 10 system.
MKV is also a widely used format for high resolution video and is somewhat currently already supported in the latest version of Windows Media Player (although most users prefer to use VLC Media Player for playback purposes).
