This is a big day for Microsoft as they announced more highlights about Windows 10 to the public. More focus on one operating system to rule them all (devices) and support for new future technologies.
Windows 10 will support all devices in the PC family, including computers, tablets, phones, laptops, etc. No longer needing multiple ports of the same OS, Windows 10 will adapt itself to the device that it is installed on. This allows for developers to support all platforms in a single app, including Xbox.
Any devices 8-inches and above in size will have access to the Windows desktop and applications. Anything screen smaller than 8-inches will only have access to the tiled UI and cross-platform apps.
This isn’t something we aren’t familiar with since Android has already been playing with this, but it is a much larger roll-out when you look at how many devices it will play with.
Possibly one of the biggest announcements though was the HoloLens. Microsoft showed off a new technology that allows holograms to interact with your daily life both at work and home. Demonstrating its uses in a professional environment, as well as the recreational environment by bringing in elements such as Skype communication and video games (ie, Minecraft). They pointed out that this will be one of the future technologies that Windows 10 will support.

Here’s hoping it doesn’t fall into a project wastebin anywhere, as this would make Kinect look like the toy that it is overnight. I know our office would be swarming with these glasses if given the chance.
They seem to be pretty deep into its development, so its pretty safe to say that this is something you should be expecting, hopefully later this year or sometime next.

*Beyond The Desktop*The groundbreaking nature of Microsoft’s augmented reality technology is not to be dismissed lightly, even more so with the mounting evidence that it will be ready to use when Windows 10 ships this year. Its unlikely to be cheap, and its first iteration will no doubt be clunky, but no first generation technology gets it right from day one. Moreover, this is a promise of what is to come; a fundamental shift in the way we interact with the digital world.Being a stickler for proper use of language, I take exception to the insistence on the use of the word “hologram” throughout all this (which would be visible in the real world without a visor), although I do understand the need to ‘humanise’ and simplify what it is they are trying to communicate. Personally, I am salivating at the prospect of using this technology, probably even more so than Google Glass. Time to start saving my hard earned money.

This would be so amazing. It reminds me of the holoband from Caprica. Sort of……..and like a dozen other similar devices from sci-fi. I love the idea of bringing the internet/computer world into our physical world using VR AR.Imagine not even having a TV. Just a spot on the wall where your HoloLens will simulate a screen on. You can all sync up and watch something together, or all be watching different things at the same time. Need to use the restroom? Just have the virtual TV follow you and play on the bathroom wall. I’d imagine interacting with things would be a challenge. To see exactly where you’re “grabbing” or pointing to and what you intend to do.

Srsly. I can remember myself in 2010 when I first saw a HD-Movie and was like: “WOW! FUTURE IS ON MY TV!”And now I sit here and watch a video in HD about holograms… I never expected this to exist that early. I always thought this will happen in like… 3050! When I wave and the hologram of my friends I chat with say hi. But this is even possible right now! *I AM FASCINATED!*
