Microsoft has officially ended all sales for Windows 7 and 8.x versions of it’s popular operating system. Keeping to their promise, Windows 10 is now the only version being supplied and sold to OEMs. A daring move as there is still a strong resistance towards Windows 10 compared to the popular Windows 7 option, which in my opinion was the best operating system Microsoft has ever delivered (XP being a strong second).
The move was originally supposed to occur two years ago but Microsoft decided to extend the timeline until this year. This only affects new licenses, so manufacturers can and will still be moving whatever they have left from the older operating systems. Once they do, it’s Windows 10 only from here on out until whatever comes next.
They will continue support for the operating systems. They just won’t be supplying new licenses. Support for Windows 7 will end in 2020, so that window is still open. Windows 8 will lose support in 2023. Once those windows close, Microsoft will no longer be supplying system updates and patches.
