Samsung announced at the Oculus Connect developer conference, their plans to release a new generation model of their popular Gear VR headset at a price that properly competes with competitors like Zeiss and helps break the ice into the wallets of a wider range of shoppers. The new headset is launching November to target the holiday shopping season and functions exactly the same as it’s predecessor only lighter in weight.
New features also include a more comfortable fitting strap and support for streaming services such as Netflix.
You will need one of the new Samsung Galaxy 6 devices (or Note 5) in order to use it since your phone acts as the screen (just like Zeiss’ headset, minus the support for non-Samsung devices).
There is no word yet on pre-orders, but you should probably expect to see more info within the next few weeks. Samsung is considering this model to be the finalized consumer edition and it will be referred to as “Gear VR2”.
