Philips has partnered with Dirac and MMD Monitors & Displays to announce its new PC Gaming Headset (TAGH401BL). The new USB headset features 3D sound by Dirac to deliver a 7.1-channel experience to gamers.
This partnership is one of many solutions that seek to deliver realistic 3D sound for both direction and distance, improving on your gaming experience by helping you to know everything that is going on around you. Users can switch over to an “optimized sound mode” for music listening when the surround effect isn’t needed and can be done using the in-line controller.
Dirac has already made a name for itself through various partnerships and integrations, such as NAD amplifiers that feature Dirac’s Room Correction technology that allows it to react to the acoustics of the surrounding environment, calibrating your audio using a supplied microphone, adjusting for both frequency and impulse response. Therefore it will be interesting to see how Dirac’s technology transitions to gaming headsets.

However, it may be some time before we find out. It looks to be targeted for the European market at this time, mainly focused in the UK. There is no mention of it expanding into the US just yet. However, if it does, the headset will likely be available via popular retailers that already carry Philips audio products (Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, etc). The MSRP is €59.90 (around $70 USD).
