PNY has announced the launch of its new NVMe Gen4 x4 SSDs, the PNY XLR8 Series CS3140. The new drives deliver everything that Gen 4 has to offer with read speeds of up to 7,500MBps and write speeds of 6,850MBps.
Remember when we all bragged about how fast SATA SSDs were when they were new to the world? The jump from HDD to SDD was something we had never seen before. At least, until NVMe paved the way to enhancements that blew away any record ever made on data transfer rates.
Now thanks to PCIe Gen 4, NVMe has the ability to push this barrier even further with speeds greater than what most systems can handle (currently). Meaning your bottleneck shouldn’t be with the drive itself. Now everything else has to catch up before drives become what’s dragging you down again, and by then, we will likely have even better drives to push the competitive edge even further with.
The new NVMe models will be offered in two flavors (version), including one with the heatsink pictured in the image above (highly recommended if your motherboard’s configuration allows the space for the heatsink) and one without (drive only). You’ll also have the option between 1TB and 2TB.
So who can benefit from speeds like this? Anyone, of course. However, the price will be the ultimate variable dictating this. At the moment, we don’t have this information yet, so that is stuck within the realm of TBD. Professionals and power-users will be scrambling to get their hands on these, seeking the reliability of having this kind of data throughput. From video editing to hardcore gaming, there will be a lot of demand this year for Gen 4 NVMe.
PNY will launch the new CS3140 SSDs into the market by the end of this month. We’ll follow up with more information once we have the chance to test one out.
