Nintendo had a huge success with the release of their classic mini consoles for both the NES (Review) and SNES when they launched. So much success that they were having issues keeping them in stock. Of course, they did control these facts quite a bit by severely limiting the number of units they sent out to each store, so clearly they were “selling off the shelves” faster than anyone had expected. Regardless, it was a major win for Nintendo.
After sitting back to watch the results, Sega is ready to get their share of the profits with the release of their very own mini console, the Sega Genesis Mini (available for pre-order). Coming September 19th (next month), you will have your chance to feed your retro hunger by playing 40 classic games from the original Sega Genesis console plus two bonus titles.
So, gone are the days where you have to worry about how legal it might be to get your hands on your favorite ROM/emulator packages. Now you can buy into the real thing and play until your thumbs go numb, knowing that you’d be supporting the company that made it all possible.
Here’s a list of what to expect:
- Ecoo the Dolphin
- Castlevania Bloodlines
- Space Harrier 2
- Shining Force
- Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

The new mini console comes with two wired controllers, an HDMI cable to run to your modern TV with, and a USB power cable. So just like the mini Nintendo consoles that came before it, there isn’t much to it.
Unfortunately, the controllers are wired, so they will feel nostalgic, but will also feel a little limited if you’ve gotten used to being so spoiled by wireless technology over the years.
Again, it will be launching on September 19th. You can pre-order yourself one right now via the button below to make sure that you are one of the first to get your hands on one. There is no word on if supplies will be limited where they might stop selling them soon after like Nintendo did with theirs, but if Sega really hits the right spot with your inner kid, you might not want to take the chance of hesitating.
