A few decades ago, parents used to chase their kids around with bulky VHS, DV and HDV cameras, trying to capture all of those memorable moments of their kids growing up. From their first steps to their first successful bike ride without any training wheels. All of that is o course history since everything is captured using the phone in your pocket.
Now, consider how cool it would be to also be able to add wireless audio to the mix, just like you would a full camera or DSLR setup, while still only using your smartphone. Although there are solutions for this already, Sennheiser has come up with a new one that requires very little on your part and doesn’t carry a big footprint (at least when it comes to anything hanging off of your smartphone).
It’s their new Sennheiser Memory Mic, that connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and gives you high-quality wireless recorded sound for your video. You simply pair it with your phone, hook it to the object or person you are trying to capture and start recording. It has the ability to continue recording audio even if the mic falls out of Bluetooth range. It will continue to record up to four (4) hours of audio on its own. Once the video is finished, the audio will sync to your phone via Bluetooth and match everything back together.
It features an internal rechargeable Li-ION battery and can clip onto its subject via a magnetic clip so that it stays secure without making any holes in clothing. It comes with a custom app that takes care of all of the busywork.
The microphone itself is a bit bulky. It looks like it is nearly half the size of an average smartphone. However, if it truly does record high-quality audio via the omnidirectional small-diaphragm condenser mic inside, then it should make for a perfect solution for family videos. You can get an idea for yourself via the video below.
It doesn’t just stop with family content as it can be used for so many other things like vloggers. However, chances are if you are looking to go the professional route when vlogging, you’ll probably opt for a solution that is more bulkier off-camera than on.
The Memory Mic is available now with an MSRP of $249 and you can currently find it here on Amazon for only $219.95, or on Sennheiser’s website here.
