A feature that has only ever been available with third party applications like Evaer is now natively supported by Skype itself. No more installing anything extra and now everyone can do it for free.
They also made it pretty easy as you can record any call you are on, let it be audio-only or video chat. All you have to do is click on the “+” icon at the bottom of the screen while your in live call, and then choose “Start Recording”. It will immediately begin recording everyone in the call, and it will even let each person know that the call is being recorded (so that you can avoid in legal complications).
Once the call is finished, everything is processed and saved to the cloud where it will be available for 30 days to everyone involved in the call, where it can be saved locally on your computer or device, or shared with others–so make sure you only record what your willing to let leak out into the world (I can see another Snappening-like controversy in the near future).
This is great though because although some of the third party solutions have been useful over the last so many years, they can sometimes experience bugs that might cause you to lose what you thought you had recorded, usually thanks to odd changes that Microsoft makes to Skype causing a conflict between the two apps. Now you can probably expect a greater chance of success since Skype itself is doing all of the work.
The new feature is rolling out to all Skype platforms (including mobile devices) with the exception of Windows 10 (app), which will come in a few weeks within an update.
At least someone over there at Microsoft is finally working on something interesting in regards to Skype. Maybe this is their way of saying sorry for removing the option to record your own voicemail greeting–which is like releasing a smartphone that can’t send MMS…oh yeah, they’ve done that too.
